Whatcom County Hunting

Hi guys, I just found this site. I have lived in Bellingham all my life except while in the Navy. I have been hunting in the Okanogan area for the past 50+ years and just learned that this years trip is out. I have a 16 year old grandson who has been my hunting partner since he was 8. This year it it his little brother's turn to join us. Sadly, we are stuck in Whatcom county for this season. Can anyone point me to some accessible areas to take the boys? We hope to go out several times before the season ends so load me up with several starting points. I'm not looking for your secret spots, but I have no idea where to begin.

Get on the MT Baker Hwy and head east... Pretty country and bring yourHiking boots...

Hello and welcome! I just started on this site as well. I used to live up there and hunted the twin lakes area and found it to be productive. Its accessible by 4X4 or at least it used to be. Haven't hunted there in years and I don't know if you still can hunt it or not but its worth checking in to. I think its paradise or Baker ranger station. Access off of MT Baker highway close to were the road starts up to the ski lodge. That's the best I can come up with for you. Sorry I don't have more info.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I expected to be off the Mt Baker Hwy somewhere, but have never known where to turn off. Hiking is good. The only places I have found on my own have been very steep and seemed to be road only, I didn't see anywhere to park and hike. I know they are out there. Any other thoughts?

The twin lakes area is perfect for that. Park at the lakes and it remote and open with trails leading off to some old mines. Pretty easy hiking if I remember correctly. You just have to call the ranger and make sure it is still huntable. I'll look at my maps and see if I can be more specific for you. Post back in a sec.

As is Church lake area.... also off of MT Baker highway.  Not sure if the road to the trailhead at CHurch lake is still open... if it is,  nice hike and great area... Twin Lakes take FS road 3065....

I'm right with ya G'pamike.  My 11 year old son completed his hunter's ed. this summer and I haven't hunted with a rifle in 11 years.  So I too have to find a place to take him in Whatcom Co.  Good luck!

FYI. I've hiked around twin lakes and never seen a deer. Could be just me but don't want you to waste your time. There's deer off every trail. Just hard to find in rifle season. I would try and stay within 30 min of Bellingham for more deer. There's also quite a few deer on pvt easy of town and if you ask it may be easier for the kid.

Get some maps and head out Mosquito lake road has a lot of access roads
 Porter creek ,Canyon lake are all of the road a lot of hunting here just make sure you know what side of the road your on divides 418'407

Both spots can get crowded, mostly road hunter thou

If you're looking for a real trophy you should focus your efforts around Fairhaven, Lake Whatcom, Lakeway Dr.,  WWU Campus and Sudden Valley.....  Seriously though.  A hike into Boulder Creek opens up into a lot of nice country...

Would thoses be good grouse areas too?
